David McBride, Ph.D. Biographical Summary



Dr. David McBride is an educator, historian, and health researcher. He has been a social science and health policy specialist focusing on disadvantaged urban communities for over twenty years.  He is the author and editor of several books and dozens of articles.  

His books include Integrating the City of Medicine; From TB to AIDS; and Missions for Science.  His articles have appeared in such journals as Journal of Health Politics, Policy and Law; New York State Journal of Medicine; Social Science & Medicine; Journal of Association for Academic Minority Physicians; and New England Journal of Medicine (letter/comment).  

Dr. McBride has been a visiting professor at Morehouse Medical College, Emory University Rollins School of Public Health, and the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill School of Public Health.  Currently Dr. McBride is completing a multicity study of critical social conditions, medical care, and prevention programs for disadvantaged urban neighborhoods. This study is funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Investigator Awards program. Currently, Dr. McBride is professor of African-American Studies and History at Pennsylvania State University.

Dr. McBride’s personal background has geared his career to center on addressing multicultural, family, health, and social equity issues.  He is one of 12 siblings whose lives were chronicled in The New York Times and international best-seller The Color or Water written by his brother James McBride. Dr. McBride’s mother, Ruth McBride, had 12 children, including Dr. McBride, and saw all of them through college and into successful professional careers.  Dr. McBride has lectured widely on both his research and personal history for colleges, religious institutions, and professional groups throughout the nation.
